09.05-09.35  Guest presentation: “Data to Discovery – Big data, machine learning informed tools for offshore spill prevention,” Kelly Rose, National Energy Technology Laboratory
Integrating conventional methods from geology, geophysics and petroleum engineering, with GIS, data-science, and big-data computing methods, the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory developed the Offshore Risk Modeling (ORM) suite. Initiated in 2011, the ORM suite is a set of innovative, science- and data-driven computational tools and models that span the full offshore system. The suite is designed to improve the prediction and evaluation of offshore systems. Using petabytes of data, the suite applies novel and efficient methods to cross-examine data across space and time to improve predictions locally for safer, more prudent future efforts, rapid-response, and real-time assessments. Since its inception, components of the ORM suite has been adapted to address energy infrastructure, carbon storage, geothermal, rare-earth element, induced seismicity, energy materials, and other oil and gas system needs.
