Keynote Breakfast Session Address: Dale W. Bradford, Vice President Global HSE, Murphy Exploration and Production Company
Dale has 26 years of operational leadership experience in the Gulf of Mexico, international offshore, and North America unconventional oil & gas industry. Since joining Murphy in 2007, Dale has overseen operations in Malaysia, Vietnam, Australia, Indonesia, Kurdistan, Congo, Cameroon, Canada, and the United States. His roles have included Senior Drilling & Completions Manager, General Manager of Southeast Asia Operations, General Manager, International Drilling & Completions, Vice President Worldwide Drilling & Services, and, most recently, Vice President Western Hemisphere Operations. Prior to joining Murphy, Dale was with BHP Billiton Petroleum, BP Americas, and Amoco Production Company. Dale holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and has completed the Executive Program at Stanford University Graduate School of Business.  Dale is a member of SPE and IADC. In addition, Dale is a Board Member of the IADC Well Control Institute and the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association (LMOGA).

Industry leaders representing land and offshore with US and global scope will share their views on key issues facing the contract-drilling industry from both a personal and company perspective.  

  • William A. “Andy” Hendricks, President & CEO, Patterson-UTI Energy Inc.
    William A. (Andy) Hendricks has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Patterson-UTI since October 2012 and as a director of Patterson-UTI since June 2017. From April 2012 through September 2012, he served as Chief Operating Officer of Patterson-UTI. From May 2010 through March 2012, Mr. Hendricks served as President of Schlumberger Drilling & Measurements, a division of Schlumberger. Prior to that date, Mr. Hendricks worked for Schlumberger in various worldwide locations and capacities since 1988, including serving in numerous executive positions since 2003. Mr. Hendricks is a past Chair and member of the Executive Committee for the International Association of Drilling Contractors and a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. Mr. Hendricks holds a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M University.
  • W. Brad James, President & CEO, Enterprise Offshore Drilling
    Mr. James graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1981 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He has over 35 years’ experience in oil & gas drilling, most recently as Senior Vice President of Marketing at Hercules Offshore. Prior to that he held various leadership roles at Transocean Offshore Deepwater Drilling Company (including Cliffs Drilling and R&B Falcon) and was founding President of Field Drilling Company and Vice President of Southland Drilling Company. Mr. James served as Chairman of the IADC Houston chapter.  He is also a member of the IADC Executive Committee and a member of the IADC Contracts Committee. He is also a member of American Petroleum Institute and Society of Petroleum Engineers. He is an Advisory Board Member of Dynamic Chemical Solutions and is a passionate Advisory Board Member of the Texas chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The Drilling Industry at a Crossroads: The time to act is now! Claus Hemmingsen, Chairman, Maersk Drilling
The drilling industry is facing an existential threat following the recent plunge in the global oil demand and price collapse. With growing expectations from investors, society, and employees we are faced with new challenges, but if we act boldly, we can turn the new reality into an advantage and create a viable and sustainable future for our industry.

Claus Hemmingsen joined the Maersk Group in 1981 as a shipping trainee and started his career in Maersk Drilling’s HR Department. In 2019, Claus completed the separation of all Oil & Gas related activities from Maersk, including Maersk Drilling and became Chairman of the now independently listed company. Mr. Hemmingsen served as 2009 IADC Chairman.

Process Safety Fundamentals: Olav Skar, Safety Director, International Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP)
Mr. Skar will discuss industry wide Personal and Process Safety Data trends. He will introduce next steps for the Wells Expert Committee and will be looking for your active support in the implementation of IOGP’s latest initiative, the Process Safety Fundamentals, a great new resource to help prevent incidents, both in Wells and other parts of our business. 

Olav Skar serves as Safety Director for IOGP. Mr. Skar previously served as Wells Learning Manager, Shell.  He holds a B.Eng (Hons) in Mining and Petroleum Engineering from the University of Strathclyde (1988) and completed his MSc in Well Design and Engineering with Robert Gordon’s University in 2009.

Industry and ESG: David de Roode, Chairman, Energy ESG Council; Executive Vice President, and Partner, Lockton Companies
The Energy ESG Council was formed as a non-profit organization to integrate all material stakeholder perspectives around ESG attributes deemed material and to establish a pragmatic and actionable “ESG” disclosure framework. Mr. de Roode serves as Chairman of the Energy ESG Council. He is very active supporter of the oil and gas industry, currently serving as an Executive Board Member of NOIA, Advisory Board Member of PESA and an active member and financial supporter of the AESC, AWO, DEPA, EIC, IADC, ICOTA, IPAA, LOGA, NMOGA, NOIA, OMSA, PBPA, PESA, SPE & TXOGA. David is the co-founder of Oilfield 360 Media and its Oilfield 360 podcast as well as the founder and lead organizer of the Senior Energy Executive Discussion Series (SEEDS) forum.

Global Launch of Human Performance Oil and Gas (HPOG) Industry Forum: Chris Parker, Human Performance Lead Advisory, BP
The HPOG steering committee is thrilled to announce the launch of this groundbreaking independent industry resource. The mission of HPOG is to improve safety and operations through the integration of human performance into systems and processes throughout your organization. This presentation will provide an overview of HPOG and describe the resources that will be made available to equip any organization across oil and gas to develop a successful and robust HP program. 

Christopher Parker has been a leader in the application of Human Factors (HF), Human Performance, and related disciplines for almost 25 years. His wide-ranging industry experience from NASA, energy, defense, rail, mining, and maritime combined with his subject matter depth in the integration of HP in design, operations, and incident investigations represents his mastery in the discipline. He led many industry initiatives including co-founder of the Human Performance Oil and Gas (HPOG) forum and in leadership of the SPE Human Factors Technical Section.  He holds a Master’s degree in Human Factors and Ergonomics and is currently the Human Performance Lead Advisor for bp’s wells organization.

IADC’s Latin America Chapter Officers will provide an update on the newly formed Chapter and its activities.

  • Carlos Ortiz Reguer, Director of Marketing Latin America, Transocean
    Carlos Ortiz Reguer is Transocean’s Director of Marketing for Latin America with 30 years of experience in the Oil & Gas industry.  He started his career as co-founder of Eaco Mexicana.  Later he joined GE Oil & Gas as Country Manager for Mexico, Central America & the Caribbean; during his tenure, he co-organized and moderated the First Deepwater Symposium in Mexico in 2007.  He has since worked in business development and marketing roles of increased responsibility with Transocean, Seadrill and Rowan Companies.  Carlos earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical – electrical engineering from Mexico’s National University (UNAM) and serves on the board of directors at Social Venture Exchange Mexico. Carlos also serves as Chairman of the Latin America Chapter of the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC).
  • Soraya Carvalho, Regional Sales Manager, Latin America, National Oilwell Varco
    Soraya Carvalho is NOV’s Regional Sales Manager – Latin America with 13 years of experience in the Oil & Gas industry. She started her career at NOV in 2007 and since then she worked in various Sales and Business Development roles. Soraya earned a bachelor’s degree in International Business and a Master’s degree in Leadership Development with a minor in Marketing from The University is Nebraska- Lincoln (UNL). Soraya also serves as Vice Chairman- Associates of the Latin America Chapter of the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC).

Latin America: The Big Unknown…Rule of Law: Dr. Jorge Piñon, Director, Latin America and Caribbean Energy and Environmental Program, Center for International Energy and Environmental Policy, Jackson School of Geosciences, The University of Texas at Austin
Mr. Piñon began his thirty-two-year career in the energy sector when he joined Shell Oil Company’s supply and transportation organization. He served as President and CEO of Transworld Oil USA prior to joining Amoco Corporation as president of Amoco Corporate Development Company Latin America, president of Amoco Oil de México and president of Amoco Oil Latin America, based in Mexico City. After the merger between Amoco and BP, Mr. Piñon was transferred to Madrid, Spain, to manage BP Europe’s western Mediterranean petroleum supply and logistics operations. With international experience in business development, joint ventures and relationship management in emerging and transitional markets, and a network of senior energy contacts in Latin America; he is recognized as an independent analyst of regional energy issues, as well as the politics of oil and natural gas in Latin America.

National Oilwell Varco celebrates its 67th Annual Rig Census and associated contractor survey. This year’s survey, focused on various topics related to the current business environment, is a major statistical benchmark on the land and offshore drilling industry. Mr. Williams will present this year’s census, as well as the survey. 

Presentation of the 2020 IADC Contractor of the Year
This annual award was established in 1988 to recognize an individual drilling contractor’s outstanding lifetime achievement in technical innovation, safety, and economic efficiency within the drilling industry. The prestigious industry award is the only one reserved exclusively for drilling contractors. All recipients of the Contractor of the Year Award are nominated and selected by other drilling contractors who are IADC members.

Featured Address: Washington Update
Policy decisions in Washington, DC can have a big impact of the oil and gas industry, from access to Federal lands and waters, to tax and trade policy.  2020 is shaping up like no other when it comes to impacts felt by our industry whether from COVID-19 or market fluctuations. This session will focus on Federal U.S. policies focused on the oil and gas sector considering current downturn as well as initial thoughts post the 2020 elections.

Special Presentation: Merrill A. “Pete” Miller, Executive Chairman of the Board, MHWirth
Mr. Miller serves as Executive Chairman of the Board, MHWirth. He previously served as President and Chief Executive Officer of National Oilwell Varco, Inc. Before joining NOV in 1996, Mr. Miller served as President of Anadarko Drilling Company. Prior to that, he spent 15 years at Helmerich & Payne International Drilling Company. Mr. Miller has served as a director of the Transocean since 2014 and currently as chairman of the Board of Directors since 2015. He is the chairman of the Board of Directors of Ranger Energy Services, Inc. since 2017, and a director of Chesapeake Energy Corporation (since 2007). Mr. Miller is also a director of Borets International Limited (since 2016) and serves on the Board of Directors for the Offshore Energy Center, Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Association and Spindletop International. He is a member of the National Petroleum Council.

Mr. Miller graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York in 1972 and, upon graduation, served five years in the United States Army. Mr. Miller received his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1980.

2020 IADC 80th Anniversary Chairman’s Award Presentation: Julie Robertson, 2020 IADC Chair, Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer, Noble Corporation
The IADC Chairman’s Anniversary Award recognizes individuals working in the field who have made a direct impact on improved performance for their company, either through a project or personal effort. The Award will be given every five years as part of IADC’s anniversary celebrations.

Update on the State of Insurance Market: Jim Pierce, Chairman, Global Energy and Power, Marsh JLT Specialty
Mr. Pierce will provide an update on the current state of the insurance market as it pertains to upstream activities. 

Jim is the Chairman of Marsh JLT Specialty USA, and has extensive experience working in the Marine and Energy Insurance fields. Jim received his undergraduate degree from Kenyon College and the Program for Management Development at Harvard Business School. He also serves as the Chairman of the Board of the I Am Waters Foundation and serves on the Executive Committee of the Chancellor’s Council at the University of Texas.

Mr. Wicklund will provide perspective to current market trends and some guideposts to 2021 and beyond.  

Jim is a Managing Director and Senior Banker in the Energy Group at Stephens Inc.  This follows a career in geophysics, engineering and operations in the global oil and gas industry, four years managing a broad energy investment portfolio and decades of following the industry as a senior research analyst. He is a member and past symposium chair of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), on the boards of the National Offshore Industry Association (NOIA), the Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Association (PESA), and the Maguire Institute Advisory Board, at SMU his alma mater.
