During the past 18 months, the previously exemplary safety record of oil and gas industry has been rocked by devastating and tragic well control events in the Timor Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. The result has been a never before seen level of scrutiny by regulators, the media and the public. The challenge now is to re-establish overall trust and confidence in the industry as a vital high-performance sector that focuses on safety and environmental protection. The 2011 IADC Well Control Conference of the Americas will seek to examine technological developments, techniques, management systems and other innovations that hold the key to the future.

Casing while Drilling: Well Control Considerations: Eric Moellendick, Director of Global Technology – Casing Drilling, Dale Oveson, Scott Petrie, and Jay O’Connor, Tesco Corporation

Well control is handled easier and safer in CwD. In conventional operations, 70% of well kicks occur during tripping; as there is no tripping in CwD, this risk is eliminated. Since casing is at or on bottom at all times, any potential problems can be addressed at their source. Also, there are no concerns about swabbing during BHA conveyance because all movement is inside casing. The presentation will include pre-planning, operational considerations, and the differences between conventional drilling and CwD.

Well Control using a Novel Solids-Free System to Minimize Fluid Losses during Overbalanced Workover Operations: Julio Vasquez, Principal Technical Professional, and Larry Eoff, Halliburton

The presentation will focus on a solids-free system, a relative permeability modifier originally developed for water control, and how it is being used to control fluid losses during overbalanced workover operations. How this system works and a wide variety of case histories will be discussed. This system has been successful in solving partial and total losses to full circulation in overbalanced operations.

Utilizing Data Management Technology to Improve Regulatory Functionality of Well Control Systems on an Aging Fleet: Barry Canfield, Engineering Manager, EFC Group

The challenge to improve Well Control Remote Monitoring and Data Management Systems is upon us. As an industry we have the technology to harness and the expertise to approach this safely, efficiently and economically. Major areas that need to be considered for aging rigs includes how to upgrade simply, providing non-intrusive and economical BOP Monitoring and Well Control Remote data capture and transfer. Conclusions are made on how new technology can be applied with a measured and economical approach while meeting the expectations of an evolving and challenging market place.

Tight Gas Reservoirs – Where Well Control Schools Fail: Guy R. Brasseux PE, Associate Director, Accumyn Consulting Company

Well control schools often educate using examples of wells capable of obvious and sustained flow, not typical of tight gas reservoirs. This presentation discloses surprisingly simple concepts to illustrate how well control schools may be improved. From this, operators and contractors can identify two significant modifications to their well control operations to minimize rig time and increase safety.

W320 Advanced Well Control Course: Bernd van den Brekel, Manager Learning Wells, Shell International E&P

The development of the W320 Advanced Well Control course and the current status with respect to accreditation by IWCF and IADC will be presented. Also highlighted is the progress towards an agreed common industry standard for Advanced Well Control training. Furthermore, the presentation will discuss the W320 content and the progress in rolling the training out, including future plans and way forward.

OGP Wells Expert Committee to Harmonize Standards and Share Best Practices: Steve Cromar, UK Chief Engineer, ConocoPhillips Well Operations

The International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (OGP) has formed the Wells Expert Committee (WEC) to define the scope of a centralized database of selected well incidents, work with API and manufacturers to identify R&D and technological needs (in particular that of BOPs), influence and renew API, ISO and other industry standards, provide input for regulators to help on regulatory change, and liaise with national oil industry associations. The WEC will also steer a task force to upgrade competency management to ensure well control training institutions and maintenance staff training programs benefit from lessons learned from specific incidents. The WEC will produce an OGP guide of technical and managerial recommendations based on the findings of OGP’s Global Industry Response Group (GIRG), including the final findings of the Macondo and Montara accident investigations, after consultation with OGP members and regulators.

Raising the Bar on Deepwater Well Control – Norske Shell’s Comprehensive Approach to Well Control during the Planning and Delivery of a Post-Macondo Deepwater Drilling Campaign: Steven Collard, Director, Welltrain Limited, and Thor Lovoll, Senior Well Engineer, A/S Norske Shell

Norske Shell has safely completed a drilling campaign in the most remote and deepest water offshore Norway to date using a new rig and a drilling crew largely new to deepwater operations. Learn how the bar was raised in well control preparedness to address personnel competence, procedures and equipment capabilities. Get an insight into the team building and training courses that developed deepwater well control competence on the entire rig site drilling team before spud. In addition, learn how wellsite coaches maintained a focus on well control by making unique use of portable drilling simulators at the wellsite.

Blowout Response: Frederico Maia, Senior Consultant, Alfonso Silva, and Fernanda Fernandes, Petrobras

The preparation of an emergency response plan (ERP) to manage and control a blowout using an Incident Command System (ICS) model will be described. This methodology provides for a systematic coordination of various parties responsible for well construction and well control. Planning the alignment of these operations is an effective means of establishing the steps needed to control the situation and return to normal operations. Using software simulations of the behavior of the well and reservoir, all plans and methodologies were tested to validate the feasibility of the ICS structure.

Prototype Field Test Results of an Automated Kick Detection System Using Standpipe Pressure and Annular Discharge Pressure: Donald Reitsma, Vice President of Engineering, At Balance, a Schlumberger Company

An automated early kick detection system that uses standpipe and discharge pressure has been developed that has a comparable and sometimes faster detection time than a Coriolis flow meter. This new system eliminates rig up time, maintenance and manpower issues associated with flow meters. Results from lab tests based on actual drilling data and prototype field tests will be presented to demonstrate the automated capability of the system in monitoring drilling conditions, reliably detecting influx, and effectively communicating the event to the driller.

A New, Dynamic Method to Compensate for Swab and Surge: Ossama Sehsah, Engineering & Technology Manager, At Balance, a Schlumberger Company

In fields with narrow limits, large swab and surge pressures can have potentially dangerous effects. One way to avoid these problems is to compensate for swab and surge by dynamically adjusting the annular pressure with equivalent but opposite changes. A new managed pressure drilling (MPD) program has been developed that accurately estimates pressure changes due to pipe movement using calculated pipe speed and displaced fluid volume. A real-time model uses the calculated volume to calculate the change in the wellbore pressure profile. The modeled pressure is used by the MPD system to adjust the annular pressure for swab and surge.

3 pm
Closing Remarks & Adjournment

  • Steve Kropla, Group Vice President – Operations & Accreditation, IADC

Unassigned Paper of Interest:

When is Enough, Enough? Using Bowties to Review Well Control Risks: Kris Smith, President, and Andy Lidstone, Risktec Solutions Ltd.

The bowtie method will be explained as a tool for assisting the rig crew in understanding and managing their well control risks. Highlights will be given on the practical benefits that organizations have gained from using the approach, together with lessons learned to avoid potential pitfalls and resulting achievements. Example case studies from applications worldwide will be included, as well as extracts from a template bowtie developed for offshore well control. The presentation draws on Risktec’s experience in applying the bowtie method in the drilling industry.
