Most of the drilling operations in the major exploration areas worldwide are carried out using a low pressure drilling riser connected to a MODU that is a dynamically positioned vessel. In the event of a failure of the vessel DP system\, the vessel will drift off station due to the action of current\, wind and wave loading. Well integrity concerns arise from two scenarios: the failure to disconnect the drilling riser and/or failure of the conductor system. The analytical evaluation of the two scenarios in case studies performed in the Gulf of Mexico will be addressed.  A Concept for Drilling Deepwater Wells with Riser-margin and a Greatly Simplified Well Design: Robert Ziegler\, Head\, Deepwater Drilling Technology\, Petronas CarigaliWell-control and well-design implications of a simple dual gradient concept that aims to always preserve primary well control via the drilling fluid gradient are demonstrated. Benefits include the ability to maintain riser margin\, use kill-weight mud to drill the well limiting any well kill operation to a single circulation\, sub-bbl kick detection\, full volumetric control eliminating heave\, roll and pitch effects and an innovative well control procedure minimizing the potential for hydrate formation and well control related NPT.
