Individual behaviour and the ability to manage change are two important aspects of an organization’s culture that influence its safety performance. This conference will focus on those areas, and be reinforced in the themes of the two panel sessions and the keynote speaker’s remarks.

The evolutional journey and the important steps taken to achieve the goal of producing a simplified and clarified system designed for use at all levels from the worksite up. The art of taking feedback and translating it into engagement and alignment at all levels in the company will be discussed. A best practice will provide insight on how to build a system with grass roots support that is mirrored to the most senior levels in the company.

10.30 Management of Change (MOC); The Full Spectrum

Management Of Change (MOC) is a wide and varied topic. Most people think of it as a large process to change a management system, process or piece of equipment in design, but in theory it is a much broader topic. This session will present examples of the most simple form of MOC (I.E. Stopping a task/job) and how this most basic level of MOC is sometimes the most crucial, to examples of MOC to a company management system, organizational MOC following a major restructuring or merger, MOC from an operator point of view (Well Construction/Well Planning) and finally MOC from a regulators perspective (managing changes in regulation or operating conditions). All these examples show the need to have a wide ranging and multi-level approach to MOC in a company today to be effective at the smallest and largest levels.

The oil and gas industry is working to improve transparency and drive performance through sustainability reporting. IPIECA, the global oil and gas industry association for environmental and social issues, the American Petroleum Association (API) and the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) have published a major update of the Oil and Gas Industry Guidance on Voluntary Sustainability Reporting. This presentation outlines the update process, highlights the business benefits of reporting and takes a look at the reporting process and key reporting elements (environmental, health and safety, and social and economic), with particular focus on the role of contractors.

The preliminary results of Phase 1 of a three phase program to support a cultural change regarding the personal health and wellness of our employees are outlined.

Medical Support at Transocean, A Global and Structured Management System: Francois Pelat, Medical Director, Transocean
Health matters are of prime importance at Transocean. A dedicated proactive medical screening program (Transocean Medtrack) provides the overseas and travelling workforce with regular medicals and medical information is available globally 24/7 online to assist with any medical issue that may arise. Transocean offshore medical resources combine well-trained medical personnel and clinic set-up, in conjunction with a robust topside medical support program managed by most recognized medical providers worldwide. An outline of this structured management system will be given.

‘Normalization of deviance’ is a long-term phenomenon in which individuals or teams repeatedly accept a lower standard of performance until that lower standard becomes the norm.

This can be manifest by:
-Past successes create a climate of complacency
-Known equipment defects are tolerated
-Near misses demonstrate robustness of system, not impending failures
-Pressure to operate is perceived by the workforce
-Concerns about operations are shielded from executive management

This panel will explore the culture that has created this behavior in the past in order to prevent it from occurring in the future.

Many organizations face a ‘plateau’ in their safety performance. Paradoxically this may be the result of too much of a ‘single minded’ focus on personal safety, and insufficient attention to the primary process-related aspects of managing the business and its relation to safety. The next step involves the management of both processes in parallel. In this presentation Dr. Groeneweg will show that a different approach towards risk management is required, both from an HSE and a management perspective.

Learning from historical disasters is paramount to avoid repeating common mistakes. A key learning from major drilling rig incidents is that crews often overlook critical information that would help avoid loss of control whether that results in major disasters or not. Learning to prevent incidents at work will take years to accomplish. Similarly to the aviation industry, the drilling community is increasingly looking at innovative ways to train and practice in the virtual world to assure that staff have acquired the skills necessary to avoid incidents in the work place. Mærsk Drilling has invested in a new drilling simulator to train and test its staff in safety critical positions on rigs in a controlled environment that resembles the rigs we operate.

Teaching Supervisors to Become Safety Coaches: Shawn M. Galloway, President & COO, ProAct Safety
Supervisors influence worker behavior perhaps more than any other level in an organization. Yet most supervisors have not received formal training on coaching and effective performance feedback skills. Providing such training has proven to be a very effective measure to reduce incidents in many organizations. For safety values to become established in an organization, they must be reinforced by leaders at, or near the point of decision. Supervisors are in a unique position to facilitate the creation of a culture that focuses on safety excellence. Discover steps to take supervisors from cops to coaches, identify how to transfer these strategies throughout the workplace; ensuring more effective safety supervision methodologies.

10.30 Best Practices: Continuous Improvement

During the last decades the oil industry has responded with improvements towards its practices when incidents happened. Several years ago the focus changed from being reactive towards proactive work in this manner preventing risks and harmfull events to occur. The Emergency Response Plans (ERP) may be seen as the last barrier to contain the spread of a crisis, threatening life or creation of major damages, on unexpected occasions. The adaptation of a new methodology developed at Cranfield University – UK to evaluate the effectiveness of ERP will be presented.

When is Enough, Enough? Using Bowties to Review Well Control Risks: Andy Lidstone, Principal Consultant, Steve Lewis, Risktec Solutions Ltd.
The Bow-Tie method is used as a tool for assisting the rig crew in understanding and managing their well control risks. The practical benefits that organizations have gained from using the approach, together with lessons learned to avoid potential pitfalls and achieve success will be highlighted. Example case studies from applications world-wide will be discussed, as well as extracts from a template Bow-Tie developed for offshore well control.

How Transparency Drives Compliance in Wells Process Safety: Arjan ter Haak, Principle Technical Expert Well Control, Shell International Exploration & Production
Process safety is concerned with the prevention of major industrial incidents caused by unintended release of energy or hazardous substances. In Shell’s Wells Process Safety, particular focus is given to wellbore integrity management. Wells Process Safety is managed through a variety of tools. Wells integrity, during the well’s lifetime and well control during the execution & intervention phase are key components in order to comply with the barrier requirement in Wells Process Safety. The Wells Assurance Model, managed by the Electronic Well Control Assurance Tool (eWCAT) provides a percentage overview of compliance with three critical requirements relating to well control i.e. Equipment certification, People certification and Routine testing compliance.
