9 am  Value Driven Safety – At Risk Behavior: James Thatcher, Ph.D, Team Lead, EH&S, Encana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc.
Value Driven Safety results in a clear understanding of why we do what we do and why we take the risks we take and internalizing this understanding in a way to establish and maintain our own Safety Culture, which is based on our Core Values. If we value safety, like we value our family, religion or homes, then safety moves away from being a priority, which can change as other priorities get in the way.

9:30 am  The S.O.S. System Combining Hazard Recognition and Behavioral Observation: Wayne P. LeBlanc, President and CEO, W C Safety Systems International, Inc.
Companies should consider using one continuous thought process from task inception, planning and hazard recognition through behavioral observations. The same system should be used for company employees as well as contract employees. The S.O.S. System was originally designed for BP. It assisted employees in perfecting a Job Safety Analysis or conducting a pre-job meeting. It is also used for performing Behavioral Observations. Data is collected and disseminated through the included Tracking and Trending process.
The S.O.S. System is icon-based and is easy to learn, easy to participate in, and works in any language.

The role played by occupational cultures, rather than those tied to national origin or organizational policies, in developing effective safety and health training for high risk workers will be presented. Examples from the author's lifetime of work in the mining industry will be provided, as well as tips on how to identify norms and values that can be used to create safer work sites.

11 am  Changing Driver Behavior: Ron Blize, QHSSE Specialist, Stefan Colhoun, Weatherford International
The discussion follows the evolution of how a fatal incident investigation and implementation of RCA findings changed the methodology of driving improvement and changed driver behavior. Results and limitations will be presented.

Moderator:
Tim Gibson, Assistant Director of HSE, Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc.

  • Brian “BruBrurud, Founder & President, Check Six

Incident free operations ARE possible. Working in the most dangerous industry in the world requires the safest environment possible. There are identifiable solutions to dramatically improve the drilling industry toward that objective while enhancing operational excellence. Mr. Brurud, a geologist, commercial airline pilot, and the most decorated fighter pilot since the Vietnam War, will look at three different industries that started their performance/safety initiatives for the same tragic reasons decades prior to Piper Alpha.

2 pm  Coffee Service & Exhibit Viewing   Sponsored by Tesco Corporation

Session Moderator: Steve Chapman, Corporate HSE Advisor, Noble Corporation

2:30 pm  Avoiding Litigation and Liability by Creating an Efficient Workforce: Rachel Smith, Attorney, Baker Hostetler LLP
In today’s changing economy, productivity and workforce efficiency are key components in the quest to sustain a competitive advantage amidst volatile and unpredictable market foes. In efforts to boost the bottom line, retain personnel and avoid unnecessary litigation, companies should emphasize the importance of accuracy, efficiency and productivity – an attorney’s perspective on what you can do.

3 pm  Doing Business Ethically Without Going Broke (Personally and Professionally!):  Practical Aspects of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act: Mary Shaddock Jones, AGC & Director of Insurance and Compliance, Global Industries Offshore, LLC
Whatever position you hold within a corporation- you MUST understand the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and make certain that the employees who work for and with you understand the FCPA. This is not just a legal, compliance or accounting department problem. The only way to ensure that you or your co-employees don’t go to jail or pay potentially enormous fines is to understand, follow and comply with the FCPA and your company’s compliance program. This presentation will explore the practical aspects of complying with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

3:30 pm  Managing Stress!  The Triangle Stress Management Program: Chad Callais, VP - Wellness Operations, STAR
The Triangle Stress Management Program focuses on three major areas. The first area is to educate participants on stress and stressors. The participants must understand the brain physiology of stress so they understand how to manage it. The second area is to teach the basic triangle “stop” method and how it works with normal brain physiology to control stress. The final area is to educate individuals with 3-5 skills that could be utilized to manage stress. These skills can be used in the privacy of one's office, during meetings and even driving your automobile. The main objective is to have everyone understand that our goal is to manage stress, not eliminate stress.

4 pm  Coffee Service & Exhibit Viewing   Sponsored by Tesco Corporation

Session Moderator: Joe Hurt, Regional VP North America & Lead Staff Land HSE Issues, IADC

4:15 pm  The Hidden Cause of LTI’s That No One is Talking About: Don Shafer, CTO, Athens Group
QHSE leaders rely on detailed Lost Time Incident (LTI) and Recordable Incident (REC) statistics to measure progress on current safety initiatives and to determine where to focus future programs. Unfortunately, on today's highly automated rigs, the shortage of software-experienced personnel results in the miss-categorization of safety incidents, concealing the major root cause of LTI’s and REC’s – the Drilling Control System (DCS). This lack of visibility hinders prevention efforts and the ultimate goal of zero accidents. In this presentation you'll hear some examples of DCS-related accidents that resulted in lost lives, gain an understanding of why this problem is miss-categorized and learn how these types of accidents can be prevented.

4:45 pm  Putting Lagging Indicators in the Rear View Mirror with Broadly Applicable QHSE Process-based KPI’s: Joe Stough, Founder, Executive Vice President of Product Strategy, Syntex Management Systems
An overview of how some Energy companies have been shifting their focus away from the standard incident-based metrics toward a set of “leading” management KPI’s which are drawn from the organizational treatment/execution of QHSE business processes. We will review the collaborative “research and analysis” process which has revealed a myriad of leading metrics that are calculated and applied as broadly as incident-based metrics. We will show how combining a large global data set with some fundamental statistical methods has resulted in finding the most meaningful leading KPI’s.

10:30 am  Traditional versus Risk Based Auditing (RBA) of Safety Management Systems: Danny Spadaccini, Global QHSSE Advisor, Weatherford
Auditors are trained to make detailed examinations of internal control systems such as OSHAS 18001, AS/NZS 4801 and various legislative requirements' and to focus their audit planning, testing and reporting on internal controls in management systems. The evaluation of controls without first examining what a Management System is managing and its risks provides no context for the results. How can the internal auditor know which control systems are most important, which are out of proportion to their risk, and which are missing? RBA provides a tool that can be utilized for Safety Professionals and Management to make informed decisions on how well a Safety Management System is managing/mitigating risk.

11 am  Sustainable Safety Cultures: Shawn M. Galloway, President & COO, ProAct Safety
Many companies are focused on creating an improved safety culture and have achieved success in doing so. You may have heard of the book by Marshal Goldsmith titled, “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There” and the same holds true for maintaining a safety culture. In this session we will discuss ways to continuously increase the positive factor of your safety culture and ensure that you don’t fall into traps that negatively affect your success.

  • Kathryn Puckett, Puckett Training Associates

John Soley’s unique perspective on safety helps others strengthen their motivation to work safe. In 2001, at age 37, John was working as a Rig Manager until a catastrophic work related incident changed his life forever. John’s unconquerable attitude and matchless sense of humor is ever present as he interlaces his safety message with the journey that he, his family and coworkers experienced from the point of his injury, through his recovery and to the life he leads today.
