Case Study: Learn How DONG Energy Has Done Extensive Improvements
to Their Emergency Management Plan by Using CrisWare’s Interactive Platform
Troels Munck, CrisWare A/S, Bjarne Siir Hansen, DONG
Energy
An HSE Advisor from DONG Energy explains how they
have managed to improve their training by bridging the gap between theory
and practice. The improvements have been achieved with the aid of a
joint-simulation tool, which has also helped DONG to visualize potential
gaps in their process training and emergency plans. As a result DONG is able
to do weekly full scale training at their own facilities, including
comprehensive evaluations, at no extra cost, and without impacting the
production.

Drilling Rigs and Aircraft Carriers: Is There Anything to Learn
from the Most Dangerous Acreage on Earth?
Brian “Bru” Brurud, Check Six, Inc.
Arguably, the aircraft carrier flight deck is the
most dynamic and dangerous real estate on Earth. In this environment, there
must be a simple mechanism for rapid change management, acceleration of
learning, and a framework in which to operate. Most importantly, there must
be a culture of crosschecks, mutual support, and oversight. This high-energy
presentation will show the similarities between drilling rig and aircraft
carrier operations and how carrier based naval aviation has evolved to
manage risk, develop leadership and accountability. This is an extraordinary
leap toward ‘Incident Free Operations’.
High Profile Visit: An Efficient Tool in Improving Drilling Safety
Mustapha Nasreddine Boucif, Medhat Salem Ahmed Al-Habsi,
ADCO
During the past two decades drilling safety had
been improving on an exponential basis from the reactive era to a proactive
era, culminating in world-class HSE performance for ADCO’s Drilling Division
in 2006. A new strategy was adopted in 2008 after a slowdown in performance
in 2007. High-profile visits to all rigs to reinforce top management
commitment to safety resulted in an outstanding performance in 2008. The
resulting LTIF was 0.09, the lowest in ADCO drilling history.

Holistic Risk and HSEQ Management
Gisle Bråstein, Synergi Solutions AS
By facilitating for standardization, verification
and enhanced transparency, well-structured information systems can bring
value to the Risk & HSEQ Management processes. Further it makes internal
control and reporting easier, more accurate and timely. Leading companies in
the oil & gas industry are now gaining valuable experiences by consolidating
their tools and methods in this area. These companies are claiming they are
able to reduce indirect costs by improving the efficiency and effectiveness
of the operational risk and HSEQ management processes, and to reduce their
direct cost by controlling the overall risk level preventing loss from
unexpected events.
Managing Safety in Difficult Times - What You Can Not Measure, Is
Difficult to Manage
Jason Vidovich, George Siokos, EDN, The Enterprise
Development Network
EDN will use new research and experience to show
how hard and measureable evidence can be made available to assess safety
improvement needs and the impact of safety improvement interventions. There
is a link that can be made between lead and lag indicators with behavioural
observations that also add value to making productivity improvements- a
particularly important focus for many leaders today as they try and meet
production and safety targets at the same time.
16:00 Adjournment
Unassigned Papers of Note:
The following paper proposals will be included in
the conference if a scheduled paper becomes unavailable. In addition, these
presentations will be made available in the IADC conference proceedings,
should the author so desire.
Drilling Waste Elimination by Application of Micro-Emulsion
Technology
Mark Zwinderman, John Harrison - Surface Active Solutions Ltd
The
application of micro-emulsion technology at the drill site allows for near
elimination of drilling waste. By using the micro-emulsion technology in
combination with automated tank cleaning systems, cleaning time can be
reduced by over 60%, and the produced drilling waste volume by up to 90%. By
applying the technology similarly in downhole cleaning operations, the
formation of liquid drilling wastes can be prevented and an easily handled
waste results that can be separated in oil, clean water and re-usable
solids. Solid drilling waste can be washed using micro-emulsion technology
and disposed off safely on-site.
