Development of Infrastructure in an Inmature
Petroleum Province:
Alan
Dowokpor,
In-Country Well Engineering Manager,
Tullow Ghana Ltd
Ghana is not an established country to support high levels of
drilling and completions activities. Ad hoc well construction activities
have previously been supported using existing facilities at Ghanaian armed
forces bases in the area. Marine support had been provided using a quay at
the Sekondi naval base. General logistics supply has been via warehousing
facilties at the Takoradi airforce base. Aviation, both a fixed wing link to
Accra and helicopter services to offshore facilties, have also been provided
from here. Well Engineering service support had been non-existent.
The
development of infrastructure to support a significant offshore operation
through well construction and production operations
will be shown.
Community
Relations Management by Marginal Field Operators:
Joseph Ekpelegho,
Community Liaison Officer, Septa Energy
Operating in a marginal field meets with the issue of accepting the facts
of
the nature of the field by the community in view of lack of knowledge and
high hopes of expectations by the community.
The
operator is faced with the issue of integrity and image building and
wants
to obtain
and sustain freedom to operate. Despite these issues, operators of marginal
fields
have shown that it is possible to meet the expectations of the communities
by the development of an all embracing community relations policy that is
cost effective
and in line with the corporate image of the company to obtain
and sustain freedom to operate as a marginal field operator.

Managed Pressure
Drilling Applications Continue Proving Successful in the Middle East and
North Africa Region; an Update in the Technology Application and
Development:
Maurizio Arnone, MPD Technical Manager; Paco Vieira, Fabian Torres,
Weatherford
Recently, several previously un-drillable or conventionally drilled
expensive wells can be easily drilled and made profitable by applying the
most adapted MPD variant. The identification of the right well/field
candidates and the correct planning/engineering process are the key factors
to obtaining the planned objectives. The process used to apply the MPD
technology correctly and the wide range of drilling problems solved in the
Middle East and North Africa region is described, where this technological
application has been recently used in an extensive form independently of the
low crude oil prices (Q4 2008 - Q1 2009) as the cost-benefit ratio of MPD
clearly justifies its applicability.
Successful Development,
Metallurgical Examination, and Field Testing of a Spherical Pipe Handling
Gripping Method That Yields More Robust In-Place Casing:
Justin Jarski, New
Product Development, Faisal Yousef, Canrig Drilling Technology Ltd, Kurt Vandervort, J. Kirk Brownlee,
Stress Engineering Services Inc for Vandervort and Brownlee.
A
new casing gripping method that uses spherical
balls to replace conventional die slips, producing less damage and better
load distribution during handling is introduced. The method includes design development;
metallurgical analysis comparing ball versus slip damage to assess damage
beneath engaged surfaces, measure load sharing and limits throughout the
gripping surface, and determine potential ID deformation and pipe yielding;
and field testing results, all to predict resultant pipe conditions during
continuous rig use. Ongoing metallurgical efforts include testing and
analysis for potential failure methods like stress and corrosion cracking,
hydrogen embrittlement, and other failure methods that threaten wellbore
life.

Managed
pressure drilling has been introduced in the last few years and has proven
that the technology can significantly change the way wells are drilled,
reducing not just the non-productive time and enabling access to reserves
previously un-drillable but also simultaneously reducing the risks. The
Secure system, its main features and typical rig-up configurations are
described and the field cases in Africa are discussed. The benefits obtained
by using the system in a variety of environments are highlighted, providing
significant savings, eliminating the common drilling problems found in
Africa, and allowing wells to reach TD when offset wells were abandoned.
Challenges and Benefits
of Data Acquisition While Drilling: Recent Experience In The Jubilee Field,
Offshore Ghana:
Dmitry Molokhov,
Reservoir Engineer; Vikas Jain, Krishna Pokhriyal, Samir Mahdi Zarrad,
Schlumberger, Pat Padayachee, Tullow Oil, Jon W Cappon, Kosmos Energy
The Jubilee
Field, located in West Cape Three Points and Deepwater Tano Blocks offshore
Ghana is one of the largest fields discovered in West Africa in the last 10
years. The field has potential resources of as much as 1.8 billion barrels
of oil equivalent, with the first output scheduled for the second half of
2010. During the development campaign in the Jubilee Field, a number of
relatively new measurements have been recorded while drilling in order to
optimize efficiency of data acquisition. Operational aspects and challenges
of data analysis with specific emphasis on formation pressure evaluation,
sonic logs and borehole images interpretation are subjects of this paper.

National Oilwell Varco, Lamali Rachid, Dhina Okba, Khelif Amar, Sonatrach
The process by which significant performance improvement was achieved
through a focus group approach combining innovative bit design techniques
and technologies, BHA optimization, optimization of parameters through BHA
dynamics modeling and formation Rock Strength Analysis is described. A
significant improvement in performance exceeded the technical limit for the
Hassi Messaoud field; the various field records achieved using the new
design in combination with optimized drilling parameters and most
importantly the 37% improvement in
rate of penetration.
Rising to the
Challenge: Deepwater Solutions:
Ryan Weeden,
Team Leader Strategic Projects;
Steve Barton,
NOV Downhole
Deepwater drilling is one of the most complex applications in the industry.
This paper reviews and reveals new solutions to two of the most significant
deepwater challenges: ultra-large diameter PDC bits in salt, and bit/reamer
matching issues. The former involves development of a 26” bit design for a
deepwater salt application, which through successful trial, has changed the
game plan on what can be achieved within salt sections going forward. The
latter is addressed with new software that has been developed to allow a
logical and quantitative approach to bit matching with reamers.
Lessons Learned with Hydraulic Packers:
James Fouras, Completions Engineer, Pioneer Natural Resources
The multi-zone completion design for a new drilling campaign was to be
changed from 3 ½” to 2 ⅞“, tubing. This new design was to incorporate issues
that the Operations Team encountered producing previous campaigns wells and
incorporate some new features. One of the producing wells had been worked
over and a 2 ⅞“, completion installed, replacing the 3 ½” initial
completion. It is the only one in the field. An evaluation of the 2 ⅞“,
re-completion was performed in order to begin the basis of design for the
new campaign. During this investigation, some catastrophic failures in
design and installation were discovered.

Integrating Safety into
Job Planning and Execution:
Wayne P. LeBlanc,
President and CEO, W. C.
Safety Systems International, Inc.
Safety is a
component of the job process and should hold the same level of importance as
planning, scheduling, execution of the job, and so forth. Safety should also
help simplify the task and not render it more complicated. Our systematic
approach assists the supervisor in leading a two-way discussion of the task
which includes not only the performance of the task, but also hazard
recognition, (and a JSA if required), at the same time. Once the task has
begun, the BBS portion follows the same thought process, so employees
observe as they have planned. This is all accomplished while not
significantly affecting the amount of time spent on planning.
