Ream-While-Drilling Technology Saves Operator’s Well in Algeria and Becomes the Standard Plan for Future Well Cases of Tight Mud-Weight Windows
Elman Mammadov, Mathews George, Hughes Christensen Company, Jean Caurel
High mud weight requirements and tight clearance between the wellbore and the liner of the wells in the Brides field in Southeast Algeria has led to the use of an eccentric ream-whiledrilling tool. By successfully enlarging the hole in the Brides wells, which have a narrow mud-weight window, this tool has become a standard for these wells, in addition to other complex wells in other fields.

A Well Intersection Crossing of the Congo River Subsea Canyon
Dean Newsom, Chevron
Chevron Angola will be executing a horizontal well intersection project in order to route a large gas pipeline below the Congo river subsea canyon. This presentation will describe the hazards and features of the Congo river subsea canyon and the engineering approach to developing a plan to intersect wells concurrently drilled from both the north and south sides of the subsea canyon. Technology used in other oilfield applications is applied to this challenging project to deliver a unique result to this technical challenge.

Meeting the Challenges of a Fast-Track Deepwater Development for the Jubilee Field, Ghana
Mike Williams, Tullow Oil Plc
The presentation outlines the plans to appraise and develop the Jubilee Field, subsequent to the discovery well drilled in June 2007. It will describe the field setting and the planning associated with the phased development, including the challenges associated with securing the required resources, particularly the rig time, given the prevalent tight market conditions.

This presentation will concentrate on planning and application in the 10-3/4 inch tieback annulus of Chevron’s St. Malo #4 well in Walker Ridge 678 offshore Gulf of Mexico in 7000 ft of water. While most operator interest is for Gulf of Mexico, most of the international interest is for applications in West Africa.

Riserless Cementing - Best Practices and Lessons Learned Including an Unbiased Comparison of Foam and High Performance Lightweight Cements
David Kulakofsky, Halliburton
An outline of the benefits and limitations of the various systems used during riserless cementing. While riserless casing strings are occasionally cemented with conventional cement, the young near-seafloor rocks often require a lighter weight solution. Cement can be made lighter through the addition of extra water, nitrogen, or hollow microspheres. Each of these three systems have advantages and limitations. These differences will be discussed as well as the lessons learned covering specialized best practices required to cement under riserless conditions offshore Africa.

2nd Generation Drill Pipe Riser (DPR): A Step Change in Performance for Deepwater Intervention
William Gamisans, Ted Thames, Hector Arevalo, VAM Drilling, Jonathan Franchi, Eric Verger, Vallourec Mannesmann Oil & Gas France
Timing saving and efficiency improvement has become possible with light drill pipe risers for deepwater intervention since early 2000. A new generation of metal-to-metal seal drill pipe riser has been recently developed for Brazil operations and is currently being considered for several West African offshore fields.

12:00 – 13:30 Luncheon & Open Exhibition

13:30 – 15:00 Session VII : Business Development
Session Chairman: George Morgan, Halliburton

RFID Tagging of Riser Strings
John Hoefler, Cameron
As drilling in deeper water depths becomes more prevalent, discovering practical ways to manage the riser system efficiently becomes increasingly more vital. Riser management techniques will be discussed, specifically the premise of a closed loop process. This process saves contractors time, money, and legitimately extends the period between required re-certifications. These technologies were initially developed for a drilling contractor currently working in West Africa, but will soon be available for utilization by all contractors. A closed loop process provides rig managers real time riser joint management. High level components of this process include: performance analysis, periodic inspection program, and spares/repair management. There will be in-depth explanations and examples of each phase of the process.
