Lessons
Learned from Real World Application of the Bow-Tie Method:
Gareth
Book, Director, Risktec Solutions Ltd.
An introduction to the key concepts of the bow-tie method providing an
overview of the history of bow-tie diagrams will be given. Using example case studies from
the drilling industry, this presentation will outline in detail the bow-tie
method. The practical uses and benefits of bow-ties will be highlighted,
including how bow-ties can be used to support competence development and

Group, Kuwait Oil Company
An outline of the previous year’s statistics, case histories of
some unusual incidents that happened in oilfields, investigation findings (immediate causes & root causes) and
methodologies adopted to bring down MVA statistics will be
given. The benefits of HSE tools adopted in controlling MVA's
such as driver improvement devices, motivational programs, simulators, etc.
are highlighted.
Changes done in HSE Management System, as a major step in controlling the
MVA’s, will also be shown.
10.00-10.30 Networking Break & Open Exhibition
10.30-12.00 Health, Safety & Environment
Session Chairman: Kosay El-Rayes, Vice President - Business Development, Middle

Can
Mobile Technology Assist Drilling Contractors?:
Stephen
Humphris, Oil & Gas Compliance Specialist, CMO Compliance
Explore the benefits and challenges of using mobile
technology to assist with the data collection and reporting for drilling
contractors in the rugged environments in which they operate, for quality,
health, safety, environment and compliance management.
A New Paradigm for Fatality Prevention: Rethinking Traditional Approaches to
High-Severity and Fatal Events:
Teg
Mathews, Senior Advisor, BST Solutions
The relative infrequency of fatalities and other serious events can give an
appearance of being random, of being beyond any reasonable degree of
anticipation and prevention. In fact, the vast majority of these events
result from exposures that are identifiable, measurable, and manageable.
Achieving Operational Excellence in KSA Drilling Operations:
Stuart Johnstone, Rig Manager, John Karish, Director SHE, Ensco plc
Track the milestones and progress of a rig working in KSA involving development and delivery of programs focused on our Safe
Systems of Work, DuPont STOP for Supervision and leadership/change
management. Developing and implementing a rig specific action plan was a key
part of this program which aided in improving safety performance. When
equipment failures resulted in increased downtime and reduced operational
performance, a similar process of developing and implementing an action plan
took place. Learn the development, implementation and
results of the action plans and some detail of the transformation
that took place in implementation of our behavioral based safety observation
process.
12.00-13.30 Luncheon & Open Exhibition
13.30-15.00 Panel Session “Security in the Region”
Moderator: Kelly McHenry, General Manager, Rowan
Drilling Company Middle East
Security is a concern throughout the
region. Although Emergency Response plans are in place, what other means of
removing crews from rig locations are in place where there may be limited
logistical resources? Secondly what security measures need to be in place
for shore base personnel and employees during crew changes for rig
personnel? This
panel will provide guidance on issues pertaining to security of rig and
shore base personnel.

been reduced to
As
Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) will be shown.
Well Control Technology Update:
Fred Ng, General Manager Engineering Services, Wild Well Control
Discussions on well control aspects of HPHT & deep water operations,
contingency planning for relief well and dynamic kill design, are issues
that are becoming more common in the Middle East Region.
Well Control
Practical Alignment:
Magdy Zaki Agaiby, Technical

Consulting & Training "Randy Smith Training Solution"
Practical Well Control knowledge along with the Well Control
certification is essential enhancing practical skills to overcome any
catastrophic events in the industry.
Organizing
practical assessments/workshops should avoid
a lot of obstacles in
well control and language barriers in the
Middle East.

Unique Completion Technique Overcomes Waterflood-Saturation Surveillance
Challenges in Wafra Field, PNZ Kuwait:
Mark C. Glaser, Engineering Manager, Adam Pasicznyk, Meshari AlJarid,
Weatherford International Ltd.
An innovative and cost-effective approach will be outlined to overcome the challenges faced
in a surveillance program that has been in use for over two years in the Wafra field located in the Partitioned Neutral Zone between Kuwait and Saudi
Arabia. A selective re-entry system, using a combination of a permanent
packer and a retrievable whipstock, was used to complete the wells. A
special technique has been used
successfully to combine vertical wellbore access needed for periodic
saturation logging and horizontal sidetracks necessary for improving waterflood efficiency.

Repairing Challenging Casing Leak, an Offshore Well Integrity Failure Case
Study:
Weka Janitra Calosa, Drilling Engineer, Kondur Petroleum SA, Bambang Sadarta,
JOB Pertamina Costa/Gebang,
Ronaldi, Well Control School Indonesia
Well integrity monitoring found that bubbles came out on X-5 casing
conductor. Several data relevant with the critical well integrity element
and safe operations are stated. The case study describes the implementation
of the system in repairing the X-5 casing leak problem including several
typical problems in a mature field. The action plan and the working of the
system will be shared with operators to learn from best field practice. Conclusions and lessons learned
will be presented.
Geomechanical
Considerations to Improve Cementing Operation Quality in South Rumaila Field:
Hamed Soroush, Geomechanics Advisor, Said Zaki, Hani Qutob, Paul Kalathingam,
Robert Kuchinski, Bilal Sami Shaheed, Weatherford Oil Tool, Basem Khdier,
SOC
Cementing operations in the giant southern field of Rumaila were conducted
using single 15.80 ppg cement slurry with a significant amount of cement
losses. A geomechanical study revealed that the formation fracture gradient
was significantly lower than the utilized cement weight. This implied that
cementing with this high cement weight could reopen the natural fractures
and even create new fractures which could consequently open conduits for
cement slurry losses. As a result, it was recommended to use quality light
weight cement instead of the current filler cement and perform cementing in
more than two stages. Furthermore, additives such as fiber and sodium
silicate were recommended to be added to combat losses through open
fractures and vugs.
14.30-15.00 Networking Break & Open Exhibition
15.00-16.30 Panel Session: Regional Economic Outlook
Moderator: Steve Brady, General Manager, Ensco plc
Rig count
is one of the most often watched indicators of the oil and gas industry's
confidence in its future. Oil prices have stabilized in the wake of the
price drop of late 2008 but offshore rig utilization in the Middle East has
not followed. Domestic natural gas demand is rising in most Middle East
countries although LNG demand has reached a plateau. New build rig orders
are beginning to flow to ship yards again; is this a result of an increase
in rig demand or are other factors driving the upswing? What does the future
hold for the Middle East drilling business? This panel will discuss future
demand for oil and gas commodities and their effect on the demand for rigs
in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Advancements in Bottom Hole Assembly Materials for Use in Sour Service
Environments:
Glenn R. Brown, Senior Technical Marketing Engineer - Middle East & North
Africa, Michael J. Jellison, James Brock, NOV Grant Prideco
An outline of BHA materials used in the past followed by a discussion of the
recent advancements in emerging alloying technology and enhanced heat
treatment processes that have yielded materials exceptionally suited for
aggressive sour applications. Case histories of the new BHA material being
used in severe corrosive environments will be presented.
The Issue
of Installing ‘Over-Specified Systems’ on MODUs:
Ted
Littlechild, Director, EFC Group
Technology, especially electronics, is a fast-moving, undergoing
ever-increasing change. It is attractive to install latest technologies
during major MODU projects, and to benefit from improvements in recording,
display, automation etc., but such systems come with demanding maintenance
requirements, which only become apparent after operations begin.
