Susan Farrell\, Managing Director\, PFC Energy Oil and gas companies are making very different investment choices as they weigh putting capital into deepwater\, unconventional plays\, shallow water or conventional onshore. Frontier and growth areas are promising\, but face challenging fiscal and geopolitical environments. PFC Energy will discuss the future industry climate\, where money is flowing and implications for the drilling industry. The $250 Billion Technology Dividend: Thomas R. Bates\, Chairman\, Hercules OffshoreThe oil and gas industry has spent billions developing technology that has improved financial returns for companies consistently at the leading edge of new product development. Suppliers and early adopters of innovative products and services have particularly benefited. As an industry that is systematically introspective\, we have often failed to tell the full story of value creation to the ultimate consumers of our products and services. Using 2008 as a baseline\, new product innovation in the E&P industry has created a technology dividend in 2012 worth more than $250 billion annually to the American consumer. Further\, an increasingly larger potential exists for international applications. 10.00 Networking Break & Open Exhibition - Sponsored by Meta-LUCID Hilton Convention & Exhibition Center Lower Floor 10.30 Managing Transition: It’s Not Your Father’s Oilpatch! Session Chairs: Rustom Mody\, Vice President Technology\, Baker Hughes Incorporated\, & George Morgan\, Account Manager Cementing\, Halliburton Our industry is in significant transition\, in processes\, technology\, size\, operations\, competency and staffing. This session will outline some of the major changes that are reshaping the wells industry. Accelerating Development of Organizational Capability to Meet Future Needs In Advance of “The Big Crew Change”: Kevin Carey\, General Manager Global Deepwater & Complex Wells\, Jim Barron\, Chevron Global Upstream and GasLike most companies involved in drilling & completions\, Chevron faces a serious challenge to source a sufficient number of highly qualified staff that can plan and execute the rapidly expanding portfolio of work around the world. This problem is compounded by the imminent retirement of a large number of our senior level staff. Our plan to address this problem was initially focused on hiring experienced personnel that could easily step into these roles\, but it soon became apparent that the depth of that resource pool was to shallow to meet all of our current and future needs. Consequently\, we made a decision to enhance our staffing efforts by creating and implementing a set of programs designed to attract new people to the industry and provide them with the training and competency development opportunities that they could take on these roles – and do it as quickly and efficiently as possible. This presentation will provide an overview of the programs that we have implemented along with some of the lessons learned and critical success factors that we have identified. Trends Transforming Roles in Drilling: John de Wardt\, President\, De Wardt and Company Inc.Emerging trends in oil / gas production include growth of integrated project management players\, outsourcing to well management companies\, emergence of production enhancement contracts\, differential of capabilities between independents and majors for key growth opportunities. As these trends begin to dominate the market they will cause significant changes in the operator role and their relationship to various suppliers including drilling contractors. The presentation will describe these trends and their impact on the role of drilling contractors and other key players. Competent People – How Sure Are You? Ford Brett\, CEO\, PetroSkills A safe and high reliability drilling operation depends on literally hundreds of decisions and proper action by at least dozens of people every day. As an industry we go to great lengths to assure suitability of materials and equipment... BOPs\, mud\, cement\, casing\, casing shoes\, anchors\, even water for cement\, and more is tested to assure safe and reliable performance. What’s more important the people or the equipment? That’s a bit like asking which is more important\, your right or left leg. You obviously need both. As an industry we do have systematic approaches in place to assure some of the competencies of personnel need for safe and reliable operation. This short presentation shows some opportunities to improve assurance techniques and how improved assurance – like the pains we take to assure equipment and material – makes economic sense as well as improving safety. Closed Loop Drilling--Impacting the Transition In Our Oilpatch: Carl Hills\, Weatherford InternationalThis presentation will discuss how the advent of closed loop drilling methods has led the way to new frontiers in safety\, efficiency\, and drillability. The transition from open-to-atmosphere systems (conventional drilling) to closed drilling systems is becoming the norm due to undeniable advantages. 12.00 Luncheon & Open Exhibition Hilton Hotel\, Ballroom\, Floor -1 13.30 Offshore Markets & Technology Session Chairs: Brett Chandler\, Senior Vice President Sales & Marketing\, NOV Grant Prideco\, & Ian Falconer\, Drilling Group Marketing & Technology Manager\, Schlumberger Rising Operating Expenses--A Critical Factor for the Offshore Rig Market: Tom Kellock\, Head of Offshore Rig Consulting\, IHS-PetrodataTrends in day rates\, oil and gas prices\, rig operating expenses and contractor profitability\, for various rig types\, both globally and regionally will be shown. It will outline a suggested methodology for making available more information on operating expenses to allow more appropriate day rate indexing in rig contracts and will list the factors affecting the practicability of setting up such a system. Innovative Compact Drillship for 12\,000 Feet Water Depths: Dieter Wijning\, Product Manager Drilling\, Huisman An outline of the design\, construction\, commissioning and turnkey delivery of the first Panamax Compact Drillship\, suitable for 12\,000 feet water depth. This ship is designed to offer a low cost and flexible alternative for drilling in ultra-deepwater. The experiences gained during the first year of operation are shared. Pull or No-pull Decisions Upon Subsea BOP Component Failures Are Delicate: Pieter van Asten\, Manager Business Concepts\, Dianka Zuiderwijk\, Lloyd’s Register Energy – Drilling Integrity ServicesSustained safe operations and regulatory compliance demonstration are the most critical aspects for such decisions. Furthermore\, BOP pulling involves excessive costs\, NPT and high-risks. A demonstration of maintaining these critical aspects would therefore positively affect safety and cost. Pull decision consistency is affected by information complexity\, time constraints and subjectivity. The innovative "BOP Risk Model" manages the above and provides assistance for rapid and consistent risk-assisted BOP pull or no-pull decisions and transparent communication. 15.00 Networking Break & Open Exhibition - Sponsored by Meta-LUCID Hilton Convention & Exhibition Center Lower Floor 15.30 PANEL DISCUSSION: Unconventional Resources\, Unconventional SolutionsModerators: Shane Marchand\, Vice President Marketing\, Helmerich & Payne\, & Hermann Spörker\, Senior Advisor Well Engineering\, OMV Exploration & Production GmbH It took unconventional approaches to develop unconventional resources in a trend that radically reshaped the global energy picture\, particularly with respect to oil. However\, the license to drill is threatened\, notably in Europe and some parts of the US. How can the industry put its best foot forward and successfully apply technologies developed in the US shale plays to open up new opportunities around the world? Panelists: Garth Sloan\, Vice President Unconventional Resources\, Total E&P Jeff Wahleithner\, Vice President Drilling\, Shell Upstream Americas Shell John Beswick\, Director\, Marriott Drilling Group Rustom Mody\, Vice President Technology\, Baker Hughes Incorporated 17.00-18.30 Welcoming Reception & Open Exhibition Hilton Convention & Exhibition Center Lower Floor Thursday\, 20 June 2013 07.30 Conference Registration\, Coffee Service & Open Exhibition Hilton Convention & Exhibition Center Lower Floor & Foyer 08.30 Welcome & Opening Remarks Hilton Convention & Exhibition Center Upper Floor Mike Killalea\, Group Vice President/Publisher\, IADC 08.35 PANEL DISCUSSION: Are We Doing Enough as an Industry to be Self-Regulated? Moderators: Sjoerd Brouwer\, Vice President Wells\, Operated\, Shell Projects & Technology\, & Kevin Carey\, General Manager Global Deepwater & Complex Wells\, Chevron Global Upstream and Gas The industry and regulators are under unprecedented scrutiny of the public and politicians. Major drilling and hydraulic fracturing accidents are threatening social acceptance of the way we go about our business. The only way to regain society’s confidence in the sustainability of our industry is flawless execution of drilling and completion activities. However\, the occurrence of well control incidents hasn’t stopped after Macondo and the question is whether the industry has responded adequately to the lessons learnt. One of the demands is the persistent call for tighter regulations. The industry’s superior response would be to take destiny in our own hands; but are we doing enough on self regulation to be effective in sustaining our business safely over time? What has the industry done since to install checks and balances sufficient to prevent another disaster? What remains to be done? Will the industry ever be truly self-regulating\, or is that an impossibility\, given the type of operations we engage in? Panelists: Jan W. de Jong\, M. Eng.\, Inspector General\, State Supervision of Mines\, Ministry of Economic Affairs David Williams\, 2013 IADC Chairman; Chairman\, President & CEO\, Noble Corporation Kevin Lacy\, Senior Vice President-Drilling & Completions\, Talisman Energy Mike Hugentobler\, Vice President\, Middle East and Eurasia\, Halliburton Alan Hippman\, Consultant\, SEDA Group SAS 10.00 Networking Break & Open Exhibition Hilton Convention & Exhibition Center Lower Floor 10.30 Licenced to Drill Session Chairs: Jack Winton\, Senior Vice President Operations\, KCA DEUTAG\, & Kevin Parks\, Business Development Manager\, Derrick Equipment Company The Next Generation Well Control: Jan Brakel\, Manager Wells R&D\, and Keith Lewis\, Shell\, Fred Ng\, Wild Well Control\, Bob Newhouse\, Noble Corporation\, Andrew Grisdale\, Maersk Oil\, Claudio Molaschi\, ENI SpA\, Gareth Williams\, BG Group\, Ashley Johnson\, Schlumberger Cambridge Research\, Patrick Reilly\, Steve Cromar\, ConocoPhillips\, Randy Lovorn\, Halliburton\, Tim Allen\, Saudi Aramco The drilling industry is moving into increasingly challenging environments\, but a number of recent and serious incidents have put the licence to operate of the industry into question. The consequences in terms of loss of life and damage to the environment of a major well control calamity are under close scrutiny by governments and the general public\, forcing the drilling industry to raise the bar on process safety. To sustain the industry’s license to drill\, a number of improvement areas were identified during a recent SPE forum of industry experts on the ‘Next Generation Well Control’ to mitigate the risk of a major well control emergency. These areas\, which will be further elaborated upon in this presentation\, include a set of global standards\, enhanced training\, ways to disseminate learning’s from well control events\, an increased level of automation related to kick detection and well control response\, and improved well construction technology. Arctic Drilling – Regulatory Issues: Abdel Ghoneim\, Chief Engineer\, Atkins An overview of the regulatory schemes of the five Arctic coastal states will be given. Navy Nuclear Power Success Stories Offer Lessons Learned for Sixth Generation Equipment Around Offshore Safety Performance and Critical Manning Shortages: Dave “Burner” Burnham\, Vice President Europe\, Africa & Australasia Operations\, Check-6 The year is 1954\, you have developed a technology that will put the US Navy decades ahead\, but the public equates atomic energy to atomic weapons. Introducing high technology\, zero tolerance for error and a large increase in requisite technical knowledge by the entire workforce proved to be a tremendous challenge. Admiral Hymen Rickover knew that it would have to begin with a complete culture change. Currently all US submarines and aircraft carriers are powered by atomic energy without a single incident to date. This presentation will share 3 catastrophic stories that redefined an industry. We will discuss the 5 Pillars of Naval Nuclear Power and the lessons learned that changed the US Navy’s culture. 12.00 Luncheon & Open Exhibition Hilton Hotel\, Ballroom\, Floor -1 13.30 Well Construction Automation for Safety and Efficiency Session Chairs: Hege Kverneland\, Corporate Vice President and Chief Technology Officer\, National Oilwell Varco\, & Joachim Oppelt\, Director\, Customer & Government Projects\, Baker Hughes Incorporated Meeting the Automation Challenge through Technology Innovation: Peter Morrison\, Software Development Manager\, John Shields\, Baker Hughes Incorporation This presentation explores the question "Has automation finally come of age in the drilling industry?" by examining the current state of technology and standards in our industry. Examples of successful automation in other industries are cited\, what is missing in the drilling industry and how we need to adjust to make it a reality. What Drives the Development of Further Drilling Automation?: Hallgeir Angel\, Manager Technology & Innovation Mechanical\, Mads\, Hvilshøj\, Eivind Gimming Stensland\, and Søren Øydna\, Aker Solutions Drilling TechnologiesThe historical perspectives of drilling automation are presented. What sparked the desire to automate drilling in the first place? The parallels\, similarities and differences between other industries and the drilling industry are explored. An analysis of the prerequisites of automation will be outlined\, and some critical views on how the drilling industry has developed are put forward. Automation has traditionally involved development of machines and tools in parallel. What is the status in our industry compared to others? The operations and steps necessary to drill have not changed significantly since the industry’s birth. Is this due to a lack of process standardization or merely be a lack of will to change current business models? Cooper\, Brian Grayson\, Weatherford InternationalUnlike conventional well control\, automated influx detection and control does not require stopping the circulation upon detection\, interpreting pressures and deploying slow circulation. Implementation of automated influx detection and control has proven very effective on wells with surface BOPs. Similar success in deep water environments requires analysis of effect on various components such as slip joint\, riser and rotating control device. Detailed analysis of automated influx detection and control in both land and deep water wells\, drilled with MPD will be presented. Benefits of smaller kick size from well design and safety point of view will also be discussed. Latest developments in Acoustic Subsea Control and Monitoring for the Drilling Industry: Lindsay MacDonald\, Technology Director\, Nautronix LtdThis presentation will review the case for secure\, high reliability acoustic signaling through water\, with applicability for Surface BOP operations\, providing communication\, monitoring and control requirements in deep water\, high multipath environments with greater than 99% reliability. The Development of Marine Well Containment Company’s Expanded Containment System: Don Armijo\, Chief Operating Officer\, Marine Well Containment CompanyIn 2010\, Marine Well Containment Company (MWCC) was formed in order to provide well containment response capabilities for the deepwater U.S. Gulf of Mexico. The introduction of its interim containment system (ICS) – available for use since February 2011 and maintained in a state of readiness should it be needed – is the result of unprecedented industry collaboration and enhances previous response capabilities. As part of its commitment to keeping pace with its member’s needs\, MWCC is constructing an expanded containment system (ECS) featuring enhanced technology and capabilities– all of which are expected to be completed and delivered this year. 3 pm Salons ABCCoffee Service & Exhibit Viewing Sponsored by GE Oil & Gas 3:30 pm Moody IIA Review of Well Control Statistics: Steve Vorenkamp\, General Manager – Training\, Wild Well Control\, Inc.Constantly comparing statistics from events to identify key factors contributing to the failure to control a well can help industry avoid potential disasters. This presentation will examine these statistics and trends. 4 pmNew Technologies for Shear Testing: Covey Hall\, Global Manager of Engineering and Consulting\, Lloyd’s Register Drilling Integrity Services\, Inc.As drilling challenges increase\, BOP shearing technology needs to keep pace. Recent trends include moves toward larger drill pipe sizes\, improved drill pipe steel\, and more inclusive BSEE Verification Standards. Evaluation of RAM capability has been based largely on empirical data\, but under conditions of rapid change in the industry\, new solutions are being sought. Lloyd’s Register’s (LR) Global Technology Center (GTC) and LR Energy-Drilling are currently conducting multiple integrated studies relative to shearing tubulars. Additionally\, a separate research project is being done by the LR Energy-Drilling Systems & Controls Group to assess performance signatures relative to RAM operator fluid flow\, pressure\, RAM position\, and force\, using externally-mounted sensors. 4:45 pm Salons ABCWelcoming Reception & Exhibit Viewing Wednesday\, 21 August 7:30 am Salons ABC & FoyerRegistration\, Coffee Service & Exhibit Viewing 8:30 am Moody IIWelcome & IntroductionIADC Well Control Committee Update Dan Munoz\, Chairman\, IADC Well Control Committee; Director Special Projects (QHSE)\, Transocean 9 amWELLSAFE: Chevron’s Well Control Assurance Program: Mike French\, WELLSAFE Project Manager\, ChevronIn an effort to “raise the bar” on well control prevention and preparedness\, Chevron looked outside of our industry towards other industries with exposure to low frequency\, high consequence events to seek ideas that might be applicable to our drilling and completion operations. This exercise involved engagement with representatives and first hand observation of processes within the airline and nuclear power industry and ultimately those of the United States Navy. Key elements of the US Navy’s SUBSAFE program which have contributed to a 50 year record of success resonated with Chevron’s drilling and completions leadership and inspired the vision for WELLSAFE. WELLSAFE is a well control assurance program currently under development with the objective of providing the maximum reasonable assurance that well control can be maintained at all times. The program is focused on influx prevention\, detection and control and considers planning\, procedures\, equipment and competency. Chevron has embarked upon a methodical and disciplined effort to develop the WELLSAFE program to ensure success over our wide range of operations\, from shallow “post hole” wells in the jungles of Sumatra to the complex lower tertiary wells we are drilling in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico. This presentation will discuss the inspiration for WELLSAFE\, key lessons extracted from the SUBSAFE program\, an overview of the WELLSAFE program structure\, the current status of program development and forward plans. 9:30 amIntegrating Human Factors into Team Based Scenario Well Control Training: George Galloway\, Development Director\, Erik Lely\, CRM Trainer\, The Well AcademyThe Well Academy has been delivering Scenario Based Well Control with Human Factors training to a pool of over 80 drilling rig supervisory personnel and is now ready to share their experience with the industry. This presentation explains how the training program has evolved since initial concept and how Crew Resource Management (CRM) has been successfully integrated into the 3 day program. Insight will be provided into how the ideal learning environment has been created for well site rig teams\, giving them the opportunity to practice dealing with unexpected well control events and learning from mistakes made. The Well Academy will share their experience of observing\, assessing and providing feedback to the participants. 10 am Salons ABCCoffee Service & Exhibit Viewing 10:30 am Moody IIOnshore Shale Drilling—A Well Control PerspectiveConventional drilling is no longer conventional! Shale drilling brings a new normal\, with vertical and horizontal well segments\, more pay zone formation exposed for a longer period of time\, pad drilling\, and the ever increasing challenge of keeping all parties fully aware of the well construction plan. This “unconventional” environment brings new challenges for well control\, particularly with prevention and detection of kicks. This panel will discuss ways to overcome these challenges from the evolution of new technologies to the competencies of the crews operating in this unconventional environment. Andrew Hunter\, Eagle Ford Asset Team\, Pioneer Natural Resources Brandon Benedict\, Regional VP Operations\, South Texas\, Patterson-UTI Drilling Company LLC Neil Bird\, Global RSS Service Line Manager\, Weatherford International Ltd. These are nominally cross referenced\, but it is still not clear what holds them together and makes them work as a “system” for well design\, construction and operation. Furthermore\, there are inherent interface issues. This presentation will deal with the two issues of systematic standard integration and the management of interfaces. Barriers Panel Discussion:Developing and managing barriers is important for all stakeholders as industry works together to reduce risks and avoid future incidents. This panel of industry leaders will further explore key issues of barrier development and management by discussing: effectiveness of the new RP 96 Standard in reducing risks; approaches\, tools\, and techniques used to effectively develop and manage barriers to reduce risks; and other recommendations for effectively developing and managing barriers for the reduction of risks. Ken Dupal\, Manager\, Process Safety Implementation-Deepwater Wells\, Shell Dan Munoz\, Director Special Projects QHSE\, Transocean Flavio Moraes\, Wells Manager\, Petrobras Trampas Poldrack\, VP Safety & Operations Support\, Basic Energy Services 3 pm Salons ABCCoffee Break & Exhibit Viewing 3:30 pm Moody IIRiser Gas Handling; Past\, Present\, Future: John Kozicz\, Manager\, Technology\, TransoceanAn overview will be provided of the evolution of riser gas handling systems\, the current state of riser gas handling systems and operating methods\, and perspective on how these systems might be integrated into well control systems and methods in the future. 4 pmToday’s Technology in Relief Wells: Bill Mahler\, Executive VP & General Manager\, Wild Well Control\, Inc.Today’s technology has greatly enhanced the feasibility of using a relief well as a viable well intervention means in the event of a blowout - to the point that the preplanning of relief wells has become part of the original well planning session. Such things as hazard assessment\, directional drilling plan\, well intercept strategy\, well kill modeling and planning for the relief well are discussed and analyzed during the original well planning session. This effort assists in identifying potential problems and risks should a relief well be required. Once these potential problems and risks are identified\, they can be mitigated or minimized prior to even having a need for a relief well itself. This level of pre-planning is required in today’s drilling environment. 4:30 pmClosing Remarks & Adjournment Conference Program Committee Benny Mason\, Rig QA International Inc. The development from a limited automated drilling rig to a high level automated rig will be addressed. The design path from the initial diesel-hydraulic driven LOC 250 design to the current auto-tripping electrical hydraulic driven LOC 400 and future rigs will be described. Consistent\, efficient and safer drilling operations are what we can achieve if we increase the level of automation on drilling rigs. Automation in Managed Pressure Drilling Applications: Essam Sammat\, Business Development Manager\, Weatherford International\, Christophe Mura\, Dong EnergyDo we need automated MPD on every rig? What do we need to ready the rig for MPD? The evolutionary progress of the MPD system as a drilling method using a closed loop will be discussed. It provides automated operations such as kick and loss detection\, automatic kick control and circulation\, automatic kill weight mud circulation\, and automatic back-pressure\, stand pipe pressure\, bottom hole and annular pressure control. Successful applications of automated managed pressure drilling will be discussed. A Flexible Software Design for Autonomous Drilling Optimization Supervisory Control: Kirt McKenna\, Rig Integration Engineer\, Espen Solbu\, William L. Koederitz\, National Oilwell VarcoThe next step in the evolution of drilling automation is a holistic approach to supervisory control of the drilling process\, mimicking a well-trained driller and team of engineers. This presentation introduces an open-ended software design that advances the capabilities of supervisory control systems. A flexible framework enables drilling specialists with low-level computer programming skills to rapidly develop algorithms with various levels of autonomy\, intelligence\, and complexity\, independent of a team of software engineers and software release cycles. 12.00 Luncheon & Open ExhibitionKiellandsalen & Antique\, 2nd floor 13.30 Enabling Technology on the Rig FloorSession Chair: Joop Roodenburg\, CEO\, Huisman Next Generation Auto Driller – Improving Drilling Performance: Niels Meissner\, Product Technical Manager\, Anders Andersen\, National Oilwell VarcoData has shown that heave\, combined with imperfect heave compensation\, are the primary factors driving weight-on-bit fluctuations on floating vessels. These fluctuations can cause severe damage to the bottomhole assembly and result in poor drilling performance\, ultimately leading to costly downtime. An auto driller\, designed to work in conjunction with an active compensation system\, is the key to reducing weight-on-bit variations\, improving heave compensation fluctuations and creating consistent and standardized drilling performance. A New Approach on Automation of Drilling Equipment: Dieter Wijning\, Sales Manager Drilling\, HuismanA new approach on how to automate\, not mechanize\, drilling equipment on mobile offshore drilling units is described. For true automation a radical new approach is necessary. Equipment is no longer the core\, automation is the core. The equipment is designed around the automation. Because of automation\, fewer people are required on the drill floor\, increasing safety. Further\, operations are more efficient\, since the system can perform at consistently high speeds. Hands Free Pipe Handling: Adham Jaber\, Sales Manager\, Weatherford InternationalTechnology that will help new and existing rigs automate pipe tripping and is easily retrofitted to double or triple land rigs\, jackups and barges will be featured. Using robotic technology\, tripping operations can be performed with no hands on the pipe. The ability to remove Derrickmen and Floorhands out of harm’s way during tripping will greatly reduce risk of injury. The automated racking-board pipe-handling system also provides consistent and repetitive tripping for extended periods and in any weather condition. By empowering rig personnel to perform tripping safely and efficiently\, one will realize as much as a 15% decrease in tripping times. 15.00 Networking Break & Open ExhibitionMunkehagen\, 2nd floor 15.30 Process ReliabilitySession Chairs: Mark Gravouia\, Product Line Manager\, Horizontal Tubular Systems\, & Dusty Sonnier\, Special Projects Manager\, McCoy Drilling & Completions A Simulation Study of the Bearing System in a Top Drive: Roland Muttenthaler\, Technical Leader\, Silvio Vasconi\, Frans Grove\, SKFIn drilling operations\, top drives remain the critical path for downtime. A robust and reliable bearing system is a critical component for reliable top-drive operation. A demonstration of how simulation tools and methods lead to improved bearing-system reliability in a top drive will be given. DesignPilot–Drilling Fluid Systems: Katarina Kjelland\, Vice President Products & Technology\, Mud Operations\, Ranveig Stalberg\, Cameron Sense ASGet a glimpse of the future and the R&D pipeline. The new methods of developing drilling fluids systems\, and the benefits of including user needs when developing future solutions will be addressed. The Use of Multidiscipline Simulation Tools for Increasing Safety\, Reliability\, Operability and Cost Efficiency for the Drilling Process in Offshore Applications: Peter Gu\, Design Engineer\, Wojciech Pomierski\, Steinar B. Examples of simulation models for offshore applications\, such as tension compensation systems\, are shown. The accuracy of simulation models compared to real measurements on the rig will be addressed. Also\, use of real-time simulation in the simulator dome for internal and external training is described. The simulation as a tool for implementing improvements of tension adjustment and BOP landing precision is shown. 17.00-18.30 Welcoming Reception & Open ExhibitionMunkehagen\, 2nd floor Wednesday\, 18 September 2013 07.30 Conference Registration\, Coffee Service & Open ExhibitionMunkehagen\, 2nd floor 08.30 Welcoming Remarks: Stephen Colville\, President & CEO\, IADCAtlantic Hall\, 2nd floor 08.40 Keynote Presentation: t.b.n. 09.00 Process Reliability IISessions Chairs: Gregers Kudsk\, VP Technical Management\, Maersk Drilling\, & George Morgan\, Account Manager – Cementing\, Halliburton Energy Services Message from the Machine–A Reality in the Drilling Industry: Ashe Menon\, Director Equipment Optimization\, National Oilwell Varco\, Claude Tomlinson\, Noble CorporationThe results of the application will be outlined and discussed in detail\, starting with testing\, which involved applying statistical correlation analysis to understand “data”. It also analyzed the different types of sensors on the application and how they can work together to provide more predictability for failures\, as well as the impact that a human has on system success or failure. What also became apparent through the application of the process was a lack of standardization for the drilling industry to abide by that would allow them to move in the direction of the aerospace industry. How to ‘Break Out’ of Old Technology…The Problem Area Addressed for Stand ‘Make-up’ as Efficiently as Possible Offshore: Tim Whitney\, Engineering Manager–MH\, EFC Group\, Keith Gaskin\, Titan TorqueThe making & breaking of drill-string\, BHA and completion assemblies has long relied upon technology combining a low torque high speed spinner mechanism and a repetitive low speed torque wrench\, The limiting parameters have been considered in parallel with latest technology evaluating\, with a view to producing a torqueing-bucking machine specifically for offshore applications. The development process is presented\, exploring issues and how several problem areas are mitigated including; space; user interface; the need to ‘bite’ the drill pipe once; continuous rotation; trend data hand-off and the development of drill pipe life cycle longevity including pressure\, rotations and torque versus revolutions data\, a critical reliability factor aiding with preventative maintenance and minimising downtime. 10.00 Networking Break & Open ExhibitionMunkehagen\, 2nd floor 10.30 EnablingSession Chair: Carsten Freyer\, VP Business Development\, Bentec GmbH Drilling & Oilfield Systems A Case Study on Dual Active Heave Drilling Drawworks Applications for Offshore Drilling: Richard Verhoef\, Product Technical Manager\, Olav Fivelstad\, National Oilwell VarcoDrilling in deeper water and deeper wells means that the current design of offshore drilling rigs is nearing its operational possibilities. Landing a 1\,250-ton riser and BOP or landing casing on a pitching\, rolling and heaving rig means that the current design for motion compensators cannot be used. Using the current motion compensators may cause down time on the rig while waiting for more favorable conditions. The introduction of active heave drilling drawworks has proven that conventional crown-mounted compensators or drillstring compensators can be eliminated from the rig. Utilizing Advanced Rig Floor Technology to Reduce Downtime and Increase Safety: Erlend Engum\, Product Technical Manager\, Jan Rohde\, National Oilwell VarcoIncidents and accidents on the rig floor occur in various pipe moving processes. They lead to lost time\, personnel injury\, and damaged machinery and pipe. To reduce the frequency of pipe-centered incidents\, an interlock management system focusing on how the pipe interacts with the handling machines is a possible solution. The system would track pipe in the main zones of the rig floor. By monitoring gripping status and movement of involved rig floor machinery\, the system\, using a secure grip algorithm\, can prevent unsafe release of the pipe. The system also incorporates a machine interlock algorithm that monitors the relevant axis of handling machines such as hoist/lower\, extend/retract\, slew\, spin and torque to prevent machines from exerting opposing forces to the pipe. IT Infrastructure to Support Drilling Automation: Pradeep Annaiyappa\, Senior Fellow\, Canrig Drilling Technology LTDThis presentation will present a private cloud-based IT infrastructure designed to bring together contractor\, operator and service company expertise to enable drilling automation in a secure environment. 12.00 Luncheon & Open ExhibitionKiellandsalen & Antique\, 2nd floor 13.30 IntegrationSession Chair: Brian Ellis\, VP Business & Technology Development\, Canrig Drilling Technology Third Party Hardware-In-the-Loop Testing of Managed Pressure Drilling Control System Software: Tom Pedersen\, Product Manager Drilling Systems\, Marine Cybernetics ASManaged Pressure Drilling (MPD) relies on specialized equipment to maintain dynamic control of bottomhole pressure and enables drilling between narrow pore and fracture pressure limits. MPD opens new possibilities\, but also reduces the margins for errors. Failures in the control system software will affect safety and may lead to non-productive time and damage to the well. The presentation will focus on Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) testing as test methodology for systematic testing of control system design philosophy\, functionality\, and failure handling capability. By using a virtual test bed\, it is possible to verify and validate the MPD control system software without risk to man\, vessel\, equipment\, or environment. What Role Does Bit Technology Play in the Automated Drilling System of the Future? A Review of Technologies and Literature Which Have Potential of Playing a Role in the Advanced Drill Rig of the Future: Dan Scott\, Senior Technical Advisor\, Baker Hughes IncorporatedThe presentation is a compilation of the activities or conceptual ideas within the industry to development of bits that help in automated drilling systems\, including adaptive control\, real time data\, etc. Enhanced Wired Drill Pipe Network to Allow for Seamless Rig Integration: Brian Van Burkleo\, Business Development Manager\, National Oilwell VarcoTo enable lower cost and even larger scale adoption of Wired Drill Pipe (WDP) technology\, a new delivery arrangement has been developed. One outcome of the new delivery model is several product enhancements to WDP facilitating more seamless integration with rig operations. This presentation will introduce some of these product enhancements\, including\, but not limited to\, a new Network Control System and Monitoring While Tripping device. While the fundamental architecture of the network remains the same\, these new product enhancements focus on improving operational aspects of the network with respect to rig floor processes. 15.00 Networking Break & Open ExhibitionMunkehagen\, 2nd floor 15.30 Barriers to ImprovingSession Chair: Fionn Iversen\, Research Advisor\, IRIS Culture and Change in Upstream Oil & Gas Business in Acceptance of New Technology: Thomas Geehan\, Senior Advisor Science & Technology\, M-I Swaco\, A Schlumberger CompanyThe upstream oil & gas sector is very conservative in adapting new technology\, which is consistent with equivalent industries using heavy machinery. No one wants version 1.0 and all are happy to watch while others take risks and debug the products and systems. The technology changes such as horizontal wells with multiple hydraulic fracture stimulations\, driving the unconventional gas shale developments\, took close to 10 years before becoming widely accepted. The Key to Successful Oil Field Automation and Mechanization: Systems Engineering Through an Integrated Requirements Verification and Validation Process: David Haas\, Deputy Program Directory\, Calvin Inabinett\, Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne Extreme EngineeringModern offshore drilling rigs utilize complex software-dependent control systems to maintain safe operations. Catastrophic incidents and unplanned downtime can be reduced when the integrated system software design is based on requirements verified during development and validated under operational conditions. Offshore operators have benefited from the application of aerospace-based systems engineering disciplines\, including software requirements verification and validation processes\, to address a wide variety of offshore rig issues. Such processes are most valuable when incorporated during system development. Significant performance benefits are also possible when these practices are included in system and sub-system retrofit and service-life extension projects. 16.30 Adjournment Unassigned Papers of Note:The following paper proposals will be included in the conference if a scheduled paper becomes unavailable. In addition\, these presentations will be made available in the IADC conference proceedings\, should the author so desire. Turnkey Solutions for Drilling Equipment Upgrades Enable Drilling Contractors to Minimize Planning Uncertainties and Investment Cost: Thomas Kipker\, Head of Product Management\, Carsten Freyer\, Bentec GmbH Drilling & Oilfield SystemsFor drilling contractors a critical task is to manage rig overhauls or equipment upgrades on a timely manner and in budget. Upgrading of drilling rigs with certain equipment is common practice and happens every day around the world.
